If you’re preparing for consulting interviews at McKinsey, Bain, or BCG, you’ve probably heard that the final round is different from the first. But how exactly?
While both rounds assess your problem-solving and interpersonal skills, the expectations shift dramatically as you move forward. Here’s what you need to know.
1. The Evaluation Focus Changes 💡
In the First Round, interviewers — typically associates or engagement managers — focus on whether you can solve the case. They want to see structured thinking, clear math, and logical conclusions. If you check those boxes, you most likely will advance.
The Final Round, however, is run by APs, Principals, Partners or senior Partners who have a different perspective. They’re not just assessing whether you can solve a case—they’re asking themselves: Would I trust to put this person in front of a client CEO in a few days?
At this level, technical skills are assumed.
2. Presence and Behaviour matter much more in the Final round 😉
While you can get by the first round with a solid frameworks and logical thinking. In the final round, that’s not enough. How you carry yourself becomes just as important as what you say.
Partners assess:
• Confidence: Do you speak as structured as a consultant is supposed to?
• Composure: Can you handle unexpected questions without losing your cool?
• Emotional Intelligence: Can you build rapport? Would clients enjoy working with you?
This shift in focus is why some candidates who perform well in the first round stumble in the final. The technical side of the case matters less; executive presence takes center stage.
